Friday I got an opportunity to visit the fishing town of Aberdeen, though the general fish market had closed by the time my colleagues and I arrived past noon. We still got a taste of the life the fishermen and women, full of charisma even at the close of the day, offering to pose for pics and some even waving us over to join them at their lunch table. While we didn’t oblige, the camaraderie was telling, and I had I been a Cantonese speaker, I would love to have sat down and hear the tales of fisherman life, for which I’m sure they have plenty of stories.

As the day wore on, we took the ferry to Lamma Island where we grabbed a seafood lunch where I got a taste of the locally brewed Blue Girl beer.

After lunch, we meandered through the warren of three level style homes nestled on the back side of the island hills until we found the beach at sunset.

Any moments spent floating in beach waters make me feel right at home, no matter the country, and adding a sip of wine really makes the moment sweet!

I’d be remiss, though, if I didn’t mention how incredibly terrifying it was taking the dark roads through the village back to the ferry. With very low lighting and tons of rainforest like greenery, full of insects and all other things that live amongst the wild of sea villages, there came a moment on the walk back where I actually stepped either on, across or over a TOAD! It was so dark that I cannot clearly say that I stepped on it, or if it was directly in front of it, but I saw it move when I stepped in its domain, and I jumped as high as I could onto the nearest fence! The couple of Cantonese speaking villagers were quite shocked at my carrying on, and they themselves kept shouting “Ching-wa! ching-wa!” laughing, “It is a toad.. but you are quite strange! We are scared of YOU!”

So, be it, I thought…. I cannot believe walking through the back roads of Lamma I actually stepped on a TOAD.

Other cool shots from the day:

This woman vendor seemed to be in her own world light years away from us standing on the side of her. She listened to her traditional music and worked on her craft, but was gracious when we asked for a picture.
